Preparing for the Holiday Shopping Season
By Jennifer Smith
In certain areas of my life and in my work, I am very organized. However, when it comes to preparing for the holiday season, I am a habitual procrastinator. I always seem to get caught off-guard and ill-prepared which is really quite silly considering that the holiday season arrives at the same time each and every year. Admittedly, part of my problem is that I really do not like shopping. The crazy crowds in the malls almost send me into a panicked frenzy. The closer it gets to the holiday season, the worse it seems to be, and the less I want to be a part of it. This year I am taking a new approach. I have already started planning and making lists because this year, I have a tighter budget than usual, would like to entertain more, and I truly want to put a lot of extra thought into each gift. My gift purchasing list is not a long one, but there are a few people that always succeed in finding me the perfect gift, and I would love the opportunity to put that same amount of care into getting something equally special for each and every one of them. This year, I am going to skip the malls and do most of my gift shopping online. This requires a bit more planning, but it is so much more relaxing to do the shopping from the comfort of my home. I am excited with the prospect of taking my expanding my shopping options from those items that are available locally to items that are available world-wide. The possibilities are endless and I can get started right now from the comfort of my home by surfing the net, bookmarking some favourites, and easily doing price comparisons. If you are going to take this approach as well, here are a few of my tips: 1. Don’t wait too long to make your purchases. All reputable sites will state their shipping methods and times but you also have to keep in mind that the postal systems and customs departments are incredibly busy prior to the holiday season. Allow enough time to ensure that your purchases will arrive when you want them to so that you will avoid disappointment. 2. Make sure to also check the online stores’ shipping information to make sure that they ship to your country. I also strongly recommend that you are aware of your country’s customs regulations, duties, and taxes. If any of these charges are applicable to your purchase, it will be your responsibility to pay them. Happy Shopping!
