Keeping a Positive Outlook
By Jennifer Smith
Running a home-based business can be very rewarding when things are running smoothly, but can present a lot of challenges along the way. During slow times it can sometimes become difficult to maintain and keep a positive outlook. There are many positive aspects to working from home. A few of them might be: 1. You are in control of your work hours. 2. You don't have to commute to and from work. 3. You receive a regular paycheque. 4. You save money on gas, clothing, and lunch money. However, some of the negatives might include: 1. An economic downturn could directly affect your income. In addition, you need to carefully budget your finances to allow for seasonal slowdowns. 2. You need to pay for your own expenses including office supplies, internet connections, and health/dental insurance, as well as plan and save for your retirement. 3. When business is slow, the solitude of working alone can sometimes begin to diminish your motivation and your creativity. To remain positive, my inspiration comes from a variety of sources. I am blessed with a wonderfully supportive husband who cheers me on each and every day. He truly believes in what I do and is absolutely sincere when he asks me "How was your day?" I gain inspiration from my customers. I am continually amazed by the wonderful comments I receive from them. I am also always honored when a customer refers me to their friends or family. When my creativity is lacking, I take a few hours to enjoy the beautiful scenery around me. A short walk with my dog, reading a good book, or trying a new recipe for dinner. All of these activities always seem to refresh and rejuvenate my creative juices. Lastly, I always refer back to my favorite quote: "Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it's called the present." - Joan Rivers |
